Sibling rivalry

The new baby sister

Priyanka was the youngest of four kids with two elder brothers and one elder sister. There was quite an age gap between Priyanka and them with the oldest being 12 and she only a baby. Being the youngest, she was spoiled rotten, especially by her two elder brothers, who saw her as their little princess, they should protect.
Priyanka grew up being the apple of not only her father’s eyes, but her brothers as well. With all the excitement of a new baby sister, the other one wasn’t given as much attention as she was accustomed to.
As the years went on Priyanka’s parents noticed a considerable difference between the way the boys treated her and the way her sister did. Trupti (the sister) wouldn’t take Priyanka anywhere with her and wouldn’t spend time with her. But the boys on the other hand, adored her and took her to most places with them.

Big brother and baby sister

Priyanka grew up a well-adjusted child, even though she wasn’t getting the older sister’s attention much. Of course, she did have the older brothers’ relationship that can only be described as magical.
Not all kids grow out of the sibling rivalry phase and sometimes it can be very difficult with both of them vying for the older people’s attention. It can cause many conflicts between the two siblings and disrupt a peaceful surrounding. Find the best pediatrician

Time to choose a pediatrician
Choosing a pediatrician can be daunting and finding the right one is time consuming. Couples start looking out for good pediatricians long before the baby arrives, there are so many all around the city all boasting the best of the best. But how do you know for sure if this one is the one for your baby.
Tom and Katy were trying for a baby but were unsuccessful for a very long time, there was a point when they thought they wouldn’t be able to have their own kids and this was very discouraging. They had planned everything out from their finances to which school would be best. They also had a list of rare baby names. As time went by and Katy wasn’t conceiving all these preparations seemed void now. Miracles do happen and just when they were giving up hope they conceived. They had everything planned, but they hadn’t thought about a pediatrician, the most important thing, so now with renewed enthusiasm they started extensively looking out for the perfect pediatrician for them.

Tips to finding the best pediatrician
As mentioned earlier, it is very hard choosing the best doctor for your new baby. There are so many choices, so many hospitals. The maternal instincts kick in for women generally in their mid-20s and can go on till they actually have a baby. During the fifth month of pregnancy; the "Nesting" instinct can set in. This is an uncontrollable urge to clean one's house brought on by a desire to prepare a nest for the new baby, to tie up loose ends of old projects and to organize your world. Dealing with teenagers

Mistakes happen
Last week we discussed on managing pre-teens and gave you tips on this universally challenging issue. We also mentioned that you’re not alone and that every pre-teen or teenager (as we discuss in this blog) displays more or less similar characteristics. Teenage period in a person’s life is said to be very confusing and a time where mistakes happen. It’s perfectly alright to make mistakes but learn from them. There are two kinds of people - those that learn from their own mistakes and those that learn from others mistakes. Go back in time to when you were a teen, what kind of person were you?

The troublesome teenage period
Maggie is a mother of a 23 year old daughter but both of them remember the time when Trupti was in her teens and both agree it was a difficult time. Trupti was rebellious; she talked back and was very adamant. She had to win every argument and didn’t like it when things didn’t go her way. She also didn’t take anything seriously. She would waste too much time on unnecessary things like spending hours in front of the computer or on her phone. She was addicted to her phone which would constantly beep whether they were eating, watching TV or spending time as a family.
Comedian and talk show host Ellen Degeneres tried something recently when she put a typewriter and an old telephone in front of kids and they had no clue how to work them. It’s important that kids know the importance of old gadgets as well as modern ones. They should especially know the importance of books and not electronic gadgets.

Dealing with teenagers
If you’re reading this, are a parent of a teenager and are facing all the issues we’ve written about (see your kid in Trupti) then you are certainly not alone. Relax, there are thousands out there grappling with the same challenge like you are. To read up on tips on how best to handle your teen click here http://mayocl.in/1vXcmbw

Early signs of reading difficulty

Travel through books
Amy loves to read and always lists this as one of her favourite ‘to do’ things. The author she loves is Sidney Sheldon, the way he writes, sketches characters, the many twists and turns of the plot... What fascinates her is the way she can travel through time and space just by sitting in the comfort of her home. Amy also enjoys thrillers and mysteries and loves to read conspiracy theories - about famous singers who are thought to be dead but are actually alive, like Tupac Shakur, Elvis and Johnny Cash.

Her love for reading didn’t come to her very early. There was a time when she was younger and couldn’t read. Amy was a slow learner and took longer than peers. She was around eight or nine when she grasped the concept of stringing words together to form a sentence.

Early signs of difficulty
There are many such cases where children learn things late and are slow bloomers. This isn’t something to worry about because they will learn as they grow. Children show many signs early on and if detected measures could be taken to tackle the issue. One thing to look out for is the way they handle spellings and the interchange of letters and numbers - a sign of dyslexia. This isn’t a major issue either because many of the brightest minds and celebrities are dyslexic. Albert Einstein was one and so is Tom Cruise. There are sure signs and to know more about it and how you can identify it early. For more information, click here http://bit.ly/YGvGOi

Top ten ways to monitor your kids' online presence-Lawrence School

Children are becoming increasingly exposed to the dangers of social media and internet use like cyber bullying, porn, image issues, cyber stalking, etc. As guardians, their safety concerns us and while we cannot avoid their exposure completely, here are top ten ways that will ensure a limited, controlled and relatively safer environment:

http://bit.ly/1wFcoog

  1. Insist on using the computer and internet in the common area of the house. The kids cannot be allowed to browse in private.
  2. Make sure you are aware of all the sites they might be visiting. Apply privacy settings and set to the highest level on networking sites.
  3. Discourage the use of social networking sites completely. Facebook prevents users below 13 to have a profile and yet this rule is flouted by many. Ensure you do not allow this.
  4. Discourage sharing of personal photos on blogs or any other interface the children might be using to interact with fellow students or teachers.
  5. Encourage a open line of communication at all times with your children. Make sure you'd be the first person to be in the know if the child gets into any trouble.
  6. Make the kids aware of the dangers that arise due to indiscreet sharing of information like the birth date, telephone numbers or befriending strangers on the net.
  7. Talk to the kids about the illusions of internet advertisements and strictly advise them from clicking on stray ads. Apply browser security checks and install anti-virus software on the computer.
  8. Ensure that the passwords are shared only with you and no one else. Discourage your kids from discussing personal information with friends or anyone else.
  9. Teach your children the right way to use the internet, the language to be used and how to use instinct to judge whether the information received over the net is worth pursuing further.
  10. Be aware of the steps to be taken in case of untoward instances like cyber bullying, stalking or threats.
Hope you find these tips useful.
