Pay it forward this Christmas season

Pay It Forward

A movie released in 2000, directed by Mimi Leder and starring Kevin Spacy, Helen Hunt and then-child star, Haley Joel Osment is about a young boy who attempts to make the world a better place when his teacher gives the class an interesting assignment – think of something to change the world and put it in action. In turn, Osment’s character, Trevor, comes up with the clever idea of paying a favour forward.

An Unconventional Teacher

Miss Singh, a teacher that is loved by everyone, and often elected the ‘most favourite teacher’ by her students and peers alike. She never teaches in a conventional way and sometimes even uses movies to get the message across to her students. This is one such movie that you could watch with your kids this weekend or suggest that kids in school watch it together.

Youth Inspiring Movies

While it stands that movies in no way are an actual representation of reality, they nevertheless mirrors actual life and are based on real events and people. There are always teachers who have inspired each one of us, and continue to do so. In everyday life, in some way or the other, we carry a little part of them in us.
These are but a few such movies inspired by teachers that spread love, cheer and joy to show students in school or play it for them at home. To know more about movies that could inspire young minds and adults alike, click here http://bit.ly/1FAjoFJ

Have a great weekend!

Early signs of reading difficulty

Travel through books
Amy loves to read and always lists this as one of her favourite ‘to do’ things. The author she loves is Sidney Sheldon, the way he writes, sketches characters, the many twists and turns of the plot... What fascinates her is the way she can travel through time and space just by sitting in the comfort of her home. Amy also enjoys thrillers and mysteries and loves to read conspiracy theories - about famous singers who are thought to be dead but are actually alive, like Tupac Shakur, Elvis and Johnny Cash.

Her love for reading didn’t come to her very early. There was a time when she was younger and couldn’t read. Amy was a slow learner and took longer than peers. She was around eight or nine when she grasped the concept of stringing words together to form a sentence.

Early signs of difficulty
There are many such cases where children learn things late and are slow bloomers. This isn’t something to worry about because they will learn as they grow. Children show many signs early on and if detected measures could be taken to tackle the issue. One thing to look out for is the way they handle spellings and the interchange of letters and numbers - a sign of dyslexia. This isn’t a major issue either because many of the brightest minds and celebrities are dyslexic. Albert Einstein was one and so is Tom Cruise. There are sure signs and to know more about it and how you can identify it early. For more information, click here http://bit.ly/YGvGOi

Tips to write an exam- attempting the question paper-Lawrence High School

This is the fifth and concluding part of our education blog series on tips to plan and study better. Do read the first, second and third and fourth parts.

In this post, we shall share some tips about how to attempt a question paper. While, it may seem matter of fact, most mistakes in an exam happen due to a combination of improper time management and anxiousness to complete the paper.

Firstly, never come to an exam hungry and sleep deprived: A hungry and sleepy mind cannot think right. Whatever is your level of anxiety, ensure that you’ve had at least 8 hrs of sleep and have had a light and healthy meal before you arrive at the exam venue.

Do not be in a hurry to start immediately:  Set aside 10 minutes of your time before beginning to write a paper. Take your time to read through the entire question paper and then decide which ones to answer first. Collect your thoughts well before proceeding to write.

It is not mandatory to attempt the paper in a chronological order: attempt the ones you are most confidant of and leave the more difficult ones to be tackled later. However, keep a mental note of how much time you are spending on each question, so that you are not short of time in the end.

Pay attention to the marks allotted to the questions: Just because, you know a lot about a topic, do not keep writing pages for a single question. Write only as much is warranted for the marks allotted for the question. That way, you’d have worked your way smartly and adequately.

Write legibly and avoid cancellations: As far as possible, maintain a clean and legible handwriting and avoid over-writing and cancellations. Keep your mind cool and do not panic even if you commit any mistake. If you have to erase/cancel out anything, do it with a single stroke and re-write.

Always allot enough time for cross-checking at the end: Avoid solving the paper until the very last moment. As soon as the first bell rings, tie up all your sheets in the correct order, check your paper for silly mistakes, spelling errors, and double check calculations, as applicable. Only if time permits should you attempt to solve any remaining question.

We hope you’ve benefited from this series of educational posts.

Tips to plan well before an exam- revision techniques-Lawrence High School

Do read the first, second and third parts.

Preparation is always the key to cracking any exam. We have already stressed the need and significance of regular and everyday studying in our series so far and also handed effective tips towards the goal. However, when it comes to preparing for a particular exam, we need to accelerate and fine tune our studying technique.
As soon as the exam dates are declared, a detailed study time-table needs to be drawn out to put things in perspective. Each subject needs to be given due weightage in terms of covering all the topics well and also set aside a revision time.

Every topic in each subject needs to be studied and revised. So starting with the most difficult topic is a good idea. Put your learning style in gear and go through all your notes in detail. Take the help of your teacher to iron out rough edges in the concepts learnt.

As you approach the dates of the exam, it is a good idea to solve, as many as possible, question papers of the previous years. This will give you the much needed perspective on time management while solving the paper and will also serve as an introspection of your preparedness for the subject.
