Beat the Summer Brain Drain

The Summer Brain Drain is a real thing. It’s the weakening in skills that occurs in children over the summer and, despite the fact that it’s widespread, it’s neither unavoidable nor unalterable. This knowledge loss is more expected to take place with mathematics skills than with any of the other subjects, particularly calculation skills. That’s your child’s ability to understand and assess math problems. Spelling is the next area of brain drain. The loss of math over spelling could because neighborhood and home surroundings give children more opportunities to exercise reading over math. 

Children who refrain from summer learning lose the about two months’ worth of math and reading skills. Being in touch with learning doesn't require solving math problems and memorizing vocabulary.

Here are a few activities to help you plan out your child’s summer:

1. Support and encourage reading habits: Make a visit to the local library or buy books for your child. Encourage bed reading even if it is past bedtime.

2. Go on educational family vacations: Pick a place and be sure to visit any historical sites that are in the area of your vacation.

3. Think about a summer camp: Most summer camps not only supply socialization for children, but also provide the chance for children to keep their brains running as they engage in problem solving.

4. Make a trip to a planetarium, science museum, or zoo: A visit to any of these institutions in addition to fun can be a great learning experience.

5. Build it or bake it: When you assist your children bake a cake or build a bird feeder, they become skilled at measuring and understanding directions. They’ll also have the happiness of accomplishing a wonderful finished product.

6. Build a tree house or a doghouse: Merge fun in the sun with creation by indulging in backyard construction. This can be a great do-it-yourself experience that will be highly educational.

7. Plant a garden: Children who indulge in gardening will be aware about dirt, seeds and seedlings, stem cutting, where food comes from and more. They will learn to care for plants and trees and develop a regard for the environment.

The summer is a great time for children to imbibe knowledge that isn't constrained within the walls of a classroom. So go ahead and make an attempt to keep your child’s brain occupied during the summer holidays by providing educational experiences.

Gerry Martin Farm:  Located on the Sarjapur-Chikkabellandur road, this place has large spaces of green and farm animals. The children could have a blast exploring the farm, climbing up and down trees and making friends with the rabbits, horses, cows, pigs and the birds while the adults can chill out at the nearby zone with food and drinks!

The farm is located on 33, Carmelaram post, Sarjapur Road-Chikka Bellandur, Bangalore.

Places to visit in Bangalore this summer - Lawrence High School

With the summer holidays just a couple of weeks away, taking a break from the routine and mundane will be on the minds of many children and parents.  While, it may not be possible for everyone to afford a luxurious holiday, this is no time to mop and fret, for namma Bengaluru itself offers plenty of options in terms of fun and entertainment.

HAL aerospace museum: Anyone with little boys at home will know that boys and planes go hand in hand. This place situated on the old airport road has a lovely display of aircrafts with flight simulators too. There is also a toy store that sells cars and planes of all sizes-surely every child’s delight!

Lal Bagh: Escape into the lush green lawns and soak up the nature’s beauty under wide canopied trees this summer. Spread over a vast expanse, this well-maintained botanical garden is surely among the jewels of Bangalore.

Gerry Martin farm: An ideal place for a picnic or even a birthday celebration, this small farm, off Sarjapur road,  houses cows, sheep, goats, horses, donkeys and even turtles and a couple of Emus. Young children would definitely enjoy their time feeding and watching these animals in their natural habitat.

Rangashankara: The place houses some of the best plays for kids. There is an age limit for the plays and parents need to take a call for age-suitability; it’s a perfect place to give wings to the creative side.

WonderLa and innovative film city: Amusement parks always hold their charm with kids of all age groups. These places are a perfect place to pump up the adrenalin and drown in the madness.

Nandi Hills: The place offers a panoramic view and is a perfect spot for picnics, treks and bird watching.  It can get very crowded on weekends, so it’s better to plan a trip during the week.

Cubbon Park: Bangalore is known for its sprawling parks and this is one of them. It also offers a few joy rides and a place for boating: perfect to spend a day with children who will have plenty to choose from.

Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum: A museum that will hold interest for science aficionados. There is a comprehensive range of exhibits on electronics, motor power and the uses and properties of wood and metal.

Hippocampus: This is an experience centre for kids with plenty of books and traditional games.  They also host children-centric carnivals and workshops; a fun place to read and introduce the child to the world of books and activities.
