Count your blessings-Lawrence High School

You must be aware that it is the Thanksgiving week in many parts of the world. It is an occasion to remember the things and/or people you are thankful/grateful for in your life. It is a reminder to count your blessings.

More often than not, we get bogged down by what we don't have rather than focusing on how far we have come in life and the multitude of things that can count as blessings in our life. The harsh real world that judges us by our materialistic belongings and competitive nature unfortunately leads us to lose our innate instincts of fairness and goodness in life. It is no wonder that we have countless incidents of suicides, juvenile law breakers, psychosomatic disorders amongst the youth and young children.

However, on the other spectrum of life we find heart-warming stories of people who have swam against the tide, fought with adverse circumstances, physical disabilities or grave illness to emerge as true winners in their chosen paths. What makes it different for these two sets of people? Nothing but a positive attitude and a passion to live life to the fullest. Life is indeed the greatest gift bestowed upon us and it is up to us to make the best out the given circumstances and our abilities.

As the saying goes, there is always something to be thankful for in our lives. So, why not take everyday as a fresh page in this journey of our lives? Take a moment each day to reflect on only the positive happenings in the day. Even if there is nothing that seems to go right, concentrate on the bigger picture. Whatever seems impossible or grave today might not matter at all in a few years time.

Poor scores in a test, not having enough friends, being teased by close friends or family, not being understood by your parents, an illness in the family; these are all troublesome issues that need to be tackled with an objective mind. Take the help of someone if you are consumed by negative feelings at any given point of time. Always reach out and share your worries with someone whom you trust. Worries when spoken aloud seem less burdensome and you might get that proverbial straw of hope to clutch on to.

Ensure your safety at all times-Lawrence School

We have been witnessing a spate of unfortunate events in the recent years that puts a huge question mark on the law and order situation in the state and country. The recent attack on a woman at the ATM  only adds to the list and it makes us wonder if safety of citizens, especially that of women and children, figures at all on the charts for our leaders.

We believe that it will take a lot of hardwork and discipline to get the country on well-oiled tracks. We also believe it takes a while to change the system and since we are a part of the whole system, it is our duty too to ensure our own safety. Here are a few tips that we could think of that might help you avoid getting into an unsafe environment or detect anything amiss:

Avoid venturing into lonely areas: Desolate areas are generally crime havens. It is best to avoid these stretches when alone.

Carry a pepper spray or umbrella: Always carry a pepper spray or an umbrella or even a deodorant with you. In case of an attack of any kind, use them to defend yourself. The assailant will be caught unawares for a few moments and you can plan your escape in the meantime.

Be aware of your surroundings: Be vigilant when outdoors. Keep an eye for anything that seems out of the usual. It could be a new vehicle parked outside your complex gate or some suspicious looking people lurking around, etc. Report anything unusual to your apartment security or bring it to the notice of a responsible person or authority.

Carry a mobile and important numbers with you always: Memorize important numbers and do not depend on the mobile for them. Dial your friend/spouse/parent’s number while travelling in an unknown vehicle and keep talking if you find the driver suspicious. Also keep your family informed about your whereabouts all the time.

Learn art of self-defense: No matter what your age is, it is always better to be equipped with some basic knowledge of self-defense tactics.

Make your kid's room interesting-Lawrence School

Are you planning a makeover for your child's room? Or are you trying to get your child to sleep in his/her room alone but find your efforts going in vain? Maybe it is time for you to take a hard look at the current decor of your child's room and see how you can make the room inviting, interesting and appealing to your child.

Clear the clutter and make room for more storage: More often than not, we tend to use our child's room to store up stuff that does not fit into the other rooms and results into a cramped up room for your child who does not have enough space to store his/her personal belongings. As your child grows older, it is advised to respect his/her space and design the room to accommodate all that they need or will need in future.

Bring in colours: If the walls are looking bare or dull, it is a good idea to paint these in cheerful colours. Kids love colours and will be happy to spend their time in a colour-filled space. If you are staying in a rented house, you can use wall decals that are easy to use and peel and come in a variety of shapes, forms and colours.

Do not add a lot of furniture: Since space is scarce in most apartments, enough care must be taken to ensure that the room does not become overpowering with all the wardrobes, beds and tables. Take care to allot enough floor space to allow easy flow of traffic and negate the possibility of the kid bumping into the furniture. Also, the shelves or racks that will be used by the child needs to be at a suitable height to allow independent handling.

Use photographs: It is a lovely idea to incorporate stuff that has memories associated with them. Old photographs of your child during younger days or photographs of your child with family members or close friends really perks up the room, makes it personal and gives a chance to associate self with the space.

With these tips, we are sure your child will be happy to spend his/her time in the room and even help the transition process.

I'm bored...Lawrence High School

Children of this generation use this phrase a little too often, isn't it? They are used to having things ready made and have no patience to experience something different, out of the ordinary. They do not know of a life without the computer, internet, mobile phones and now smart phones. Playing games on the phone and chatting discretely over Facebook, it is no wonder that when placed in real-life social environments, many children find it difficult to cope.

A mother of a 10 year old laments that her son does not want to come out in the open to play. He feels that the playground is dull and boring. This, when there is about 2 acre of open space in the gated community with exclusive areas dedicated to playing sports like badminton, football, to run or cycle. Finding same age friends is also not a problem in the complex of 500 odd apartments.

Is the new age or technology solely to be blamed or are parents equally responsible for such a scenario? It seems like the parents have a greater role to play as care-givers. For, when the child demands a new toy  don't parents rush in fulfill the demand even when it seems a little unreasonable? When the child refuses to eat food, don't the parents easily turn to video games or T.V to distract the child?

I-phones and I-pads easily find their way into the hands of kids as young as four or five and sometimes this is even talked of proudly in social gatherings. Why should you then blame the kids for falling prey to technology when we ourselves have no control over our usage? Kids after all imitate the parents and they are also sensitive and smart enough to pick up the vibes and unsaid words.

As parents, we have a far more difficult and responsible job in bringing up our children as grounded, happy and thinking individuals who are not slaves to technology but are smart to use them judiciously and correctly. Starting them off on good habits early on is extremely important and a little discipline is expected on the part of the parents too. A good and healthy eating practice, inculcating a love for books and reading, playing outdoors, etc are some of the things that need to be made as a routine in a child's life. And, it is never too late to start too!

Tips for a safe Diwali-Lawrence High School

Bursting firecrackers on Diwali is intrinsic to the celebrations and despite all the noise and pollution it causes, the ones that sparkle and lit up the sky does indeed bring cheer and joy to all celebrating. However, the fire crackers can turn dangerous if not burst with caution. We don't want a happy occasion to turn sour due to lack of discretion and care. So, here are our few tips that we'd like to share with you all:

Never let younger kids be alone around crackers: Children under 12 years need to be supervised personally by an adult while bursting crackers. Very young children need to be kept away while the older ones have to be accompanied by the adult.

Be vigilant: Very often it is a neighbour's cracker that misses its path and comes dangerously close, so it is very important that you have your ears and eyes open and look out for any dangerous elements.

Burst crackers in an open space: Never burst crackers in closed enclosures, balcony or near a house or building. Choose a common area that has a lot of space to light the cracker and make a safe exit. Never hold or let your child hold a cracker in the hand while bursting.

Do not bend over to light: Do not bend too much while setting a cracker on fire. Maintain a safe distance and back off carefully when lit. If the flames extinguishes prematurely, wait for a few seconds before you set it on fire again.

Carry a bucket of water: Always keep a bucket of water handy near the place where you intend to burst crackers. This will come in handy in case of any untoward incidents.

Appropriate clothing: It is not advisable to wear synthetic or flowing clothes when bursting crackers. Wear cotton clothes and always keep loose ends like that of a dupatta or a saree pallu tied up.

Clean-up: Wash your hands and legs thoroughly after coming home to remove the residues of the chemicals.

It is always better to be safe than sorry, so use your judgement, be cautious and enjoy this Diwali. Wishing you all a happy and safe Diwali.
